How to Play Hearts

🎯 Objective

Avoid winning tricks that contain Hearts (1 point each) or the Queen of Spades ♠Q (13 points). The player with the fewest points when any player reaches 100 wins the game.

🃏 Setup & Passing

Each player receives 13 cards. Before play, choose 3 cards to pass to another player. The pass direction rotates each round: Left → Right → Across → Hold (no pass). The 2♣ always leads the very first trick.

🔄 Playing a Trick

You must follow the led suit if you have it. If you cannot follow, you may discard any card - but on the very first trick you cannot play Hearts or the Queen of Spades. Hearts cannot be led until they are broken (a heart is discarded earlier in the game).

🌙 Shooting the Moon

If one player wins all 26 point cards (all 13 hearts + ♠Q) in a single round, every other player receives 26 points instead. This is called shooting the moon - a high-risk, high-reward play!

💡 Strategy Tips

  • Pass the ♠Q or high spades to opponents to reduce risk.
  • Lead low cards early to control who wins tricks.
  • Watch if someone is collecting all hearts - stop them before they shoot the moon.
  • The 2♣ must open the first trick; no hearts or ♠Q can be played on trick 1.
